The Stats Man
At this year’s Volvo Masters Andalucia, Reuters held their annual presentations for the players who top the Reuters Stats for the European Tour. They also included a surprise presentation to the man who has worked in the Stats Tent since the revamp of a facility that is now very much part of every player’s armoury in the quest for better and better golf – the man in question is Dennis Blasdale and his wife Lynne
The 2004 Warwickshire Union Dinner
With the EGU President Paul Fisher as principle guest, the 2004 WUGC Annual Dinner saw some 200 club members and guests celebrate and very successful season for Warwickshire Golf, as was reflected in the praise given, in speeches from Paul Fisher and WU President Jim Dean, of the three team titles, the individual honours at National and Regional level and of course the Warwickshire Champions themselves. After the more conventional part of the evening, many guests were then reduced to tears of laughter during more than an hour of stories from raconteur Mr Bob Webb
Awareness and regulation costing your club
This editorial is not about a pretty model using a buggy. Its about something much more serious, two areas of real concern for golf clubs which members and management might not be fully aware of, if at all. That lack of awareness could cost a club financially. The first part of this feature is about new certification to be able to serve alcohol, and the costs of obtaining this form of licensing which could include ‘consulting’ fees, as is the trait in this climate of regualtion. The second looks at making sure that a club keeps its ability to cater for disabled people, whatever the weather.
Introducing the prospective new WUGC Secretary
At the new half yearly council meeting for the clubs of the Warwickshire Union, President Jim Dean (Kenilworth) introduced the person to be put forward by the Union Executive for the position of Secretary of the Union – Graham Hayes of Coventry Finham. Graham, aged 57 at the end of this November, will take over from retiring Secretary John Stubbings at next years AGM in March (subject to the endorsement of the clubs) and will shadow John for the next five months to learn all about one of the most important posts in any counties golf.
Another Coventry win
The Bainbridge shield has not left the City of Coventry in recent years and today, at a glorious Sutton Coldfield GC, Coventry Finham returned the huge trophy to their clubhouse after it was a few miles across the city at Hearsall for 2003-2004. With some spectacular golf, David Hayes and Matt Cryer were nine under par in beating the Maxstoke team of County Juniors Ben Stafford and Rob Browning by 6& 4
Winning with Poulter
Three players went into the final round of the 2004 Volvo Masters Andalucia with a realistic chance of winning the title and the 625 000 Euros first prize, the World Ranking points on offer, and the satisfaction of a year of good golf, especially for those without a 2004 win. The Volvo Masters is a ‘major’ championship for any player on the European tour and as such, its final nine holes are the time when the Championships are won and this year was no exception.
