The Volvo Masters Andalucia 2003 - Our review
If you fly into Malaga Airport and turn west, you are entering the Costa del Golf , around 100 miles of coastline really dedicated to our game. Virtually the last place on this journey is Sotogrande and Valderrama, quite simply the best resorts and courses of the region. When the Volvo Masters was first incepted in 1988, Valderrama was still in the process of being redesigned by Robert Trent Jones, but the course was invited to hold the championship and the clubs efforts were rewarded.
Tony Reading - Reflections from the President of the Union
If you have attended a County Match, or a County Championship, over the past two years, you will have met the soon-to-retire President of the Union, Tony Reading. Tony is instantly recognisable, tall and distinguished . He would probably hate to be called debonair but he epitomises a look of a retired Guards Colonel and is always immaculately dressed. At the end of his two years as President, he took time to reminisce about golf in the comfort of his home club, Maxstoke Park Golf Club.
Tom Whitehouse is a Member of the European Tour
With a final round of 69 in the European Tour Qualifying School, Tom Whitehouse will join the two already established Tour players Paul Broadhurst and Steve Webster, and Jamie Elson, newly qualified through the Challenge Tour, as a member of the European Tour for 2004. Paul Broadhurst so aptly described this event last year as being the most stressful of times and having lead with two rounds to go, it was a brilliant performance from Tom to keep his place in the Top 35 whilst a number of more experienced players did not do so and will therefore not have Full Playing Privileges for the coming season.
The Bainbridge 2003 – It’s a Home Win!
No other club, since 1979, has provided the two finalists for the Bainbridge Shield, the oldest Warwickshire Trophy. Twenty-four years ago, for the first time it was Coventry Hearsall and for the 2003 final, between the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams from Hearsall, the morning 18 was watched by a player from that final. There was a good gallery but with weather conditions deteriorating as the day went on, great golf was not possible.
Its a Warwickshire Win!
Warwickshire approached this final against the strong Nottinghamshire side with some trepidation due to the absence of three regular members of the team. Our strength in depth meant that replacements of a good calibre were available although Chris Dougill(Stoneleigh) was a last minute stand in without previous experience in the under 18 side.
Rob Browning is No 1 on the JoM
Rob Browning was one of 9 players in with any sort of chance of overhauling the 2002 JoM No1 Chris Evans at the start of the JoM Championship. In reality though, just four players could take Chris s title - the others would have to rely on Chris taking last place. The four were Dale Marson, Rob Browning, Chris Hazeldine or Sam Foster.
